He needs to actually see the blood poisoning gridlining through his skin before he'll acknowledge the problem; he needs to lay eyes and track the difference in someone who's just been told something to actually fully get the impact it had on them, otherwise it's theoretical, it's all just theoretical. He knows on some level he makes her happy because look, she's here, and she's happy, but he doesn't really get the level to which that's changed because he didn't know her well enough until they were a little ways in to start seeing it.
